After my trip to India and Dubai, I have resumed classes at school and wanted to share some daily scenes. The students impress me everyday and it is wonderful to be surrounded by so much talent and beauty everyday.

Completed the painting today and just added the bling on the eyes (the glints in the pupils) - I love doing that....like a cherry topping on a  beautiful cake. I hope you enjoy looking at her as much as I did painting it.


I was drawn to this picture as I loved the concept...the black dress, black flowers in her hair and Abigail's strong features. She is such a pleasure to watch in the movie "Little Miss Sunshine".

This painting was done from another pic from the Urban Weeds blog, Lisa really takes good pictures. I was drawn to this photograph as he had quirky glasses and I loved the beret. Just realized this is my second painting of a guy in a beret.....whats with me and berets! 

At school, after weeks of working on the cast drawing on rough paper I finally transferred it to good paper and will be working on the rendering this wednesday. I missed last mondays class due to Thanksgiving and that has put me behind my class - not liking it. Anyways I plan to go in for an extra class this week to make up.

What's on my easel today?

Been working on this painting from the sketch I did earlier of the lovely Abigail, and its been a good three days of  working on the shadows and eyes. I stopped looking at it today as I am tempted to keep adjusting and I fear I will just mess it up. So tomorrow will start work on the hair and rest. I think my attention to detail is what draws me to portraits...getting the shape of the eyelids just right, the length of the lips, the shape of the eyebrows.......I really do enjoy doing portraits. Did I mention how gorgeous this Epson Somerset paper is - it feels like stiff watercolor paper with a textured surface. This is one of my favorite paintings as I like the concept of the portrait with the big floppy hat - something about it feels very old-worldly. The printer did a phenomenal job of color matching and his customer service was superb. So happy I found a great Giclee printer...worth the search!

Enjoyed painting this piece especially the eyes. After months of painting on hardboard I painted this on gallery canvas and it felt quite different to me. I am going to do a few more on canvas just so I get a good feel for it and in between might do my hardboards. 

Just back from Curry`s from having to buy more supplies for my art school. We are also learning gestural drawing from a live model using comparative measuring. 

It`s been raining all day and grey and dreary...but.........the fall colors are gorgeous, some trees are a bright red and the grass has never been greener. I am blessed to get to enjoy 4 seasons in a year - quite different from living in Dubai and Bahrain where it is sweltering, boiling and roasting hot 365 days of the year!

Another painting from Urban Weeds done from a black and white photograph. D and I spent all of sunday photographing the artwork in vintage settings and we were very happy with the results. I knew I wanted the vintage suitcases and typewriter. It was his idea to add the yarn to bring in a soft element and I believe it works!

The above painting was done from a photograph from the Urban weeds: Portland Street Style blog. The photographer the immensely talented Lisa was kind enough to allow me to paint her stunning pictures and above was my first shot at painting a colored painting from a black and white photograph. 

Sarah the model, owns a beautiful shop called Lille Boutique that deals in vintage lingerie and wedding gifts. You can see more of Sarah and Lisa's work in their links above.

Completed this painting on my wood panel I mentioned in an earlier post and liked the way the paint dried on it. The grain shows somewhat despite the three layers of gesso but I think it just adds to its overall effect. Enjoyed doing this portrait and have completed a few more after this. I have been sketching alot lately in charcoal and pastels. Will post some of those later. 

Largest painting

This is the largest painting I have done. I sometimes embark on projects larger than life and surprise myself when I do see it through. This was a commission from a lovely lady of Kenyan origin and the painting now resides in her home in Australia. The painting is an abstract composition of a matrix of Masai warriors on a heavily textured surface. The background color which was a total of 6 layers of color, was scrubbed  on with cheesecloth. 

This photo was taken out in our home in Dubai and you can see a bit of the mural I did on the garden wall. 

April

This painting comes framed in a floating frame with the canvas sides wrapped in black felt. Most of my older work is framed in floating frames and they give the painting a wonderful cohesive look. Lately I have been painting on panels / hardboard as I like the stiffness of the board and the smooth surface. 

Enjoyed doing this painting in Dubai and for me it was more about the colors than the detail of the image.

Lily

I did this painting during the phase of exploring the female form. It was completed in Dubai and I was fascinated with capturing the transparent fabric against her skin. At the time D had built me a studio in our stairwell which had a 14 foot ceiling. D divided the space in half and I had a 7 foot studio with skylights illuminating my studio from both sides. I used a ladder to get up there and it was my piece of heaven. Got much work done in this space and recently found out that the house has been torn down to build a high rise. Boo hoo!
